Riddle’s Court Nocturne

Riddle's Court

by JW Steel

“The Goodliest House” in Edinburgh’s Old Town has a wonderful, colourful history, although its original owner, Baillie John McMorran, met an untimely death when he was shot dead by 15 year old William Sinclair in a riot.

The gentleman’s mansion originally came w gardens whose footprint encompassed the area we now know as Victoria Street and Terrace.

Hidden behind the irregular and characterful facade, the rooms flow magnificently, revealing rare and beautiful features. The green dining room’s ceiling, as well as telling the building’s narrative, depicts leaves and plants

Riddle’s Court is a unique building, it’s survival remarkable. Today it stands at a crossroads – the SHBT have taken a long lease to try and secure it’s future.
