Sea Blaze

Sea Blaze

Once in a while you get to spectate blazing sunsets along the Berwickshire coast. Pink sky at night… I find the best ones are those looking up the rocky shoreline towards Eyemouth. The district is steeped in folklore and legend. Grey seal colonies provide the strange soundtrack at dusk. These quick, colourful, creations are the antidote to the geometric Townscapes I create at the Garret.

Riddle’s Court Nocturne

Riddle's Court

by JW Steel

“The Goodliest House” in Edinburgh’s Old Town has a wonderful, colourful history, although its original owner, Baillie John McMorran, met an untimely death when he was shot dead by 15 year old William Sinclair in a riot.

The gentleman’s mansion originally came w gardens whose footprint encompassed the area we now know as Victoria Street and Terrace.

Hidden behind the irregular and characterful facade, the rooms flow magnificently, revealing rare and beautiful features. The green dining room’s ceiling, as well as telling the building’s narrative, depicts many leaves, plants, and flowers. A Patrick Geddes quote solves the mystery “This is a green world, with animals comparatively few and small, and all dependent on the leaves. By leaves we live. Some people have strange ideas that they live by money. They think energy is generated by the circulation of coins. Wheras the world is a vast leaf colony… and we live not by the jingling of our coins, but by the fullness of our harvests.”

Riddle’s Court is a unique building, it’s survival remarkable. Today it stands at a crossroads – the SHBT have taken a long lease to try and secure it’s future.
